Week No. 07 — Introduction
Lent 2023 | Day 08 | Wednesday, April 05
Personal Reflection
☝️ While this concluding statement (and the whole prayer, for that matter) is worth far more than its ability to inspire pragmatism, I will say that Love is the only lasting source of confidence and longevity, anyway. Sure, fear can motivate for a while, but not without killing you in the process. Love actually enables what it motivates, or asks, of us.
Becoming A Conduit
(Gonna have to rework this intro as it was a section from the beginning, first.)
Sometimes, the words come to me out of nowhere (and hopefully I’m not so lazy as to let them go by without jotting a note down, or recording a voice-memo to come back to when they do).
Sometimes, I go searching for them.
The work that we’re doing this month is that of habituating ourselves to a practice wherein we cultivate an attentiveness and receptivity to a creative state that is otherwise experienced as frustratingly fleeting.
Hardly a coaching call goes by without someone lamenting how long it has been since inspiration has struck. When it comes to this problem, there is nothing new under the sun. It’s the very thing that Julia Cameron is trying to address through the use of her Morning Pages through The Artist’s Way, or that Stephen King somewhat brutally attests to in what is perhaps my favorite on-the-subject book — On Writing — “Amateurs sit and wait for inspiration, the rest of us just get up and go to work.”
So we’re showing up to discover and (do our best to) welcome what comes, and put it down.
We’re trying to take the mind’s random “sparks of inspiration” and turn them into a fire that keeps burning because we’re getting better at showing up to attend to it.
Like most of life, the work is two-fold — a tension of opposites — wherein I participate by this showing up, and am passed through by Something greater than me once I have.
Most creative people that I have read will attest to this *Presence “*showing up” as faithfully as we do (although, in Reality, I think that It is always there, whether or not we take the time to recognize It). There’s some debate as to whether or not What shows up is God or a higher Self or some combination of both, but the point is that you don’t have to go very far for creative-types to get all woo-woo about becoming a “conduit” for some sort of terrifyingly-exciting Spirit to present itself with the opportunity to pass through you.
